Honoring Mothers: A Mental Health Perspective

By: Courtney Tomaszewski, LMHC

Mother’s Day celebrates the love and dedication of mothers — but it’s also important to recognize the emotional weight mothers may carry. Behind the smiles, some face anxiety, exhaustion, and isolation without the support they need.

Motherhood brings joy, but it can also bring immense pressure. Postpartum depression, burnout, and daily stress are common, yet stigma may keep mothers silent. Acknowledging these struggles doesn’t make a mother weak — but human.

True support goes beyond one day of pampering. Mothers need consistent care, encouragement to seek help, and permission to prioritize their own wellbeing. Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s essential for mental health.

This Mother’s Day, let’s honor mothers by listening without judgment, offering real support, and celebrating their full, human selves. Let’s also speak openly about maternal mental health, breaking the silence that too often surrounds it.

Caring for a mother’s mental health is one of the most meaningful gifts we can offer — today and every day.

Here are a few meaningful ways to support mothers:

  • Check in regularly. A simple “How are you really doing?” can make a big difference.

  • Offer practical help. Drop off a meal, help with errands, or take the kids for an hour so she can rest.

  • Respect boundaries. Give mothers permission to say “no” without guilt.

  • Normalize therapy. Encourage and support mental health care as part of wellness — not a sign of failure.

  • Watch for warning signs. Be aware of signs of depression, anxiety, or burnout, and gently offer resources if needed.

  • Speak up. Share your own challenges if you’re a parent — openness helps end stigma.

  • Celebrate her beyond the role. Recognize the person, not just the title of “mom.”

  • Give space for emotion. Let her feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or sad without rushing to fix it.

  • Reinforce rest. Sleep isn’t a luxury — it’s necessary. Help make it happen.
