Finding the Right Therapist: It’s Okay If It’s Not a Perfect Fit
When you’re matched with a therapist, it’s important to recognize that the first therapist you work with might not be the perfect fit—and that’s okay! Therapy is a relationship, and like any relationship, it requires mutual understanding and communication.
If you feel that your therapist’s style isn’t resonating with you, don’t be afraid to bring it up in session. A good therapist will be open to feedback and willing to adjust their approach to better meet your needs. In fact, discussing these challenges can be a powerful part of your therapeutic journey. They also can help find a new therapist that better aligns with your needs.
Challenge Yourself to Communicate
It’s natural to feel hesitant about addressing concerns with your therapist, but doing so can lead to deeper trust and more effective therapy. If you feel uncomfortable with something your therapist says or does, try framing your thoughts like this:
- “I noticed I’ve been feeling unsure about our approach. Can we talk about it?”
- “I’ve been thinking about how we focus on [topic]. Can we explore a different way to approach it?”
- “I’m finding it hard to connect with some of the exercises. Can we adjust them?”
Remember, therapy is for you. This assessment will help you understand your preferences for therapy and guide you toward finding a therapist who aligns with your needs. The goal is to give you insight into what style of therapy might feel most comfortable and effective for you. However, it’s okay to not know exactly what type of therapist you’re looking for! Answer based on what feels right in this moment. Therapy is a journey, and your preferences may change as you grow and discover more about yourself.
